Building A Child’s Sense of Self Pride
Your daughter or son’s pride in self is their mental base. A self-assured child is assured, stable, cheerful, well-adjusted and flourishing. They can find the solution to problems that may come their way, and bloom under a loving parent’s instructive care.
What are some commendable ways to formulate pride in selfin your child?
Without doubt, you have to accept your child for who they are, and guide them do the same. Show your child that nobody is perfect, and that everyone can make mistakes.
Show them how to learn and grow from their mishaps, and let them know that you also can make misjudgements. Kids with high pride in self are able to take what they have learned from misjudgements and bring them into play them down the road. A child with poor pride in self become frustrated and resort to self deprecating behavior, such as calling themselves ’stupid’ and vowing to ‘never try that again.’
You need to help your child uncover their potential and talents, and suggest channels for them to strengthen and improve them. Congratulate your child not only for developments in skills and abilities, but also for the attributes they naturally possess.
Prompt your child to make positive choices. Have a candid chat with your child and talk about the options with them. Kids who master skills from making positive choices when they are younger are better prepared for the difficult choices they have to make when they are adults.
Make sure you you spend lots of quality time with your child, at least twice a week. Whether you are enjoying a hobby together or going out for a meal, take time to chat and keep in touch. If you find it difficult to fit in quality time during a hectic week, take the time to chat about matters during the drive to school or while they are helping you put the groceries away.
Remember, being a parent is the most important job you will ever have. You need to do it well.
