Why You Should Be Exercising Your Brain

While everyone knows that it is important to exercise the body, not everyone knows that it is just as important to exercise the brain. Your brain is a muscle like your biceps and the rest of the muscles in your body, and like them, it will grow weaker if it is not used properly. Unlike most body muscles, however, your brain requires mental, not physical, stimulation. Puzzles, strategy games, studying, and general problem-solving tasks all work the brain, and help it to grow stronger, healthier, and more capable. What does this mean, exactly? Working your brain provides both short term and long term benefits. For short term, you are able to perform critical thinking at much higher levels, solve problems faster, and your reasoning skills are increased. In the long run your brain will become much more capable of performing complex tasks, react faster and perform functions more accurately, and you will be more protected against diseases that afflict the brain, such as Alzheimer’s.

There are things out there that you will encounter in daily life that will actually hinder your brain’s function and make it weaker. These things, although unavoidable, can be controlled to an extent by you, and it is important that you limit them to keep your brain from slipping into a mundane, unhealthy state. Stress and anxiety work against the brain, and impede your ability to think rationally. Elevated stress levels put strain on the entire body, and the brain is no exception. If you are constantly in a state of high anxiety, it is important that you seek as much time as possible to relax and allow your body to slip back into a normal state of existence. Also, a life that is driven by routine, and which lacks variety, spontaneity, or challenge is an extremely harmful environment for the brain. The brain is designed to learn, reason, and adapt, and loves to be challenged. If it is not tested, it will very slowly degenerate. This can lead to serious illnesses down the road.

So how can you go about stimulating and exercising your brain? Fortunately for all of us, there are numerous ways that you can go about getting your brain a great workout! The key here is to make sure that every part of your brain gets exercised. For example, crossword puzzles and word searches are great ways to work a certain part of the brain, but if these are the only exercises you do, the rest of your brain is left unchallenged and unstimulated, and inevitably suffers. So it is best to make sure that you have a constantly changing and challenging line-up of exercises that will test your brain in a variety of areas. While activities on paper are great, there are also a lot of computer and video-based programs that are designed specifically to challenge your brain. These are great, because they contain a large variety of problems and puzzles that are designed to work out every area of your brain. These games are growing in popularity, and plenty of video game titles are coming out that are based solely around the concept of brain exercising. Any game that involves planning, thought, strategy and decision making can also do a great job in stimulating the problem solving and reasoning areas of the brain! Just make sure that you are constantly challenging your brain. – Letting a certain exercise become routine and easy is not a challenge!

All in all, it is important that you test all of the areas of your brain. Doing activities that require hard learning, creative skills, reasoning, and puzzle/problem solving will not only help you increase your mental ability, it will also greatly reduce your chance of developing mental disorders later on in your life. Remember that one of the most important aspects to remember is change – the brain likes to have to adapt, and suffers when plunged into any long form of routine. Find things that will challenge yourself, but don’t go overboard – pick challenges that are at your level. If you aren’t at a level where you can solve a particular puzzle, for example, the stress it will cause you will likely counter any of the benefits you gained by pushing your brain.
